A celebration of love!

February 14, 2009
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
John 3:16

Listening to Daddy tell them the story of St. Valentine

Love heart shaped bacon sandwiches and a home-made card!

Beautiful roses and a card

Dave asked me to marry him in the January of the year 2000; he took me on a winter picnic to Raglan Castle in Wales, got down on one knee with my beautiful emerald ring in one hand and said these words:

“Leah, I love Jesus more than anything or anyone else in the world and He will always come first….will you marry me”

I couldn’t say much for the tears streaming down my face and the need to quickly blow my nose (very romantic!) but of course I said YES.

The presence of God was so strong in that moment; a very powerful and beautiful memory.

The main reason that causes me to fall in love with my husband more everyday is not just for his amazing sense of humour, his charm, his kind heart and loving attitude towards me and the children, not just for his sense of fun and adventure or his amazing ability to inspire and lead, but I love my husband because he loves Jesus MORE than anything or anyone else. As a family we see this through his life, his attitude, his decisions and his love…for us.

Today is the 14th February; our annual celebration of ‘love’! My cynical side would say it is merely another commercialised ‘Hallmark’ holiday that gives the western consumer another reason to spend money we don’t have on something we don’t understand…OR, as I am today have decided to consider this thing called ‘love’ and use it as a learning opportunity for my children and a great excuse to once again show my extravagant love to my husband and children.

We sing about it, shout about it, talk about and write books about but do we really ‘get’ it?

It comes in so many packages.
Our greatest example of love is Jesus giving his life for others; for you and I so that we could have eternal life. Our greatest example of love is sacrificial love.
The simple most powerful love is deeply giving and deeply sacrificial.

“Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous, it does not brag, and it is not proud. Love is not rude, is not selfish, and does not get upset with others. Love does not count up wrongs that have been done. Love takes no pleasure in evil but rejoices over the truth. Love patiently accepts all things. It always trusts, always hopes, and always endures.”

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

As life goes by and I’ve grown into womanhood my perspective on love has become deeper, more detailed and most certainly a matter of decision.

So here’s some of my thoughts on love today:

Love is…

Being asked to spend the rest of my life with one man

Sharing the blessing of bearing, birthing and raising children

Being protected and provided for, being prayed for and ‘watered’ by the Word

Still falling in love, figuring it out and laughing at the days to come

Being told I’m loved everyday

Waking up next to my best friend every morning

Still cherishing his kisses, still laughing at his jokes

Sharing this amazing, but at times scary journey called ‘life’

Loaning my body for 40 weeks to carry and grow a child

Giving up ‘my’ time to feed, nurture and love a newborn…through the night!

Sacrificing my ‘sleep’ every time a child wakes to be fed, comforted or taken to the toilet

Being secure in my husbands love

Being secure in the greatest love of all

The love He shows, the love HE grows, the love I know

So LOVED the world He gave His life – for ME, for YOU

What greater love can we know?

May you know His great love today
