Cultivating Thankfulness

June 8, 2009

I love Tammy’s challenge today; it’s so important to cultivate thankfulness in our children’s hearts, to set an example and put things in our day/week that will encourage this in them (and us).

Thankfulness takes our eyes off ourselves and helps us focus on Jesus and others; a GREAT start to anyday!

This is what she set us to do:

  • Do something for a family member that shows how thankful you are for them!
  • Spend time with your family, talking about and praising God for His many blessings!
  • Brainstorm something special you and/or your children can do for someone else in need.
  • Sit down (include your children if possible!) and write or make a thank-you card for someone who has blessed you recently.

We started by looking at Psalm 100 together:

“Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth.

Worship the LORD with gladness;
come before him with joyful songs.

Know that the LORD is God.
It is he who made us, and we are his;
we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving
and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.

For the LORD is good and his love endures forever;
his faithfulness continues through all generations.”

The children memorised this Psalm in the Autumn last year so it was good to jog their memories and discuss the importance of coming to God with thanksgiving.

We then did our thanksgiving exercise, we often have this as part of our morning devotions. You can use counters, bricks, pasta; anything really – today we used marbles! You put the marbles (or whatever you’re using) in the middle of table, along with a container/jar, each member of the family takes 5 (or however many one of the children chooses) and then you go round the table, each person takes turns to say something they are thankful to Jesus for, when they have said it the marble goes in the jar. We keep going round until everyone has used up all their marbles and by then we usually grab some more as we have SO much to be thankful for! We had a great time doing this today; it really stirred our heart of thanksgiving to our King Jesus!

Joel carefully choosing his marbles – LOTS to give thanks for !

Still a few to go…Micah trying to get involved too!!

We decided today (and everyday) that we are REALLY thankful for Daddy and we wanted to do something special to bless him. Dave had left his ‘to do’ list on the table today and there were a couple of things that he needed to buy and fix in the bathroom. We decided to head on down to the home store and buy what he needed…and have a go at fixing it!! It was a success and blessed his socks off to find it done when he got home from work!

We had a great day; I am SO thankful to a great and faithful God for blessing me with my husband and my children; I am a RICH RICH lady!

I’ll leave you with a picture of my little Micah’s new fascination…the washing machine! SO cute; or not so cute as today he figured out how to turn the dial – clever little thing!!

Happy Monday Mama’s!

Blessings
Leah
