More than a feeling

February 13, 2012

Love is the giving, the living and the sieving; through what is truth and what is emotion
Love is not a magic potion

Last week I posted this poem; this particular line (above) has resonated with me again and again these past days since I tapped away at my keys and presented my attempted creativity to you!

Feelings and emotions are funny things aren’t they?  I’m watching and discipling my 9 year old daughter in managing them and ruling them as she enters into her developing womanhood stage, but it’s not over for us Mama’s either is it?  How long are the years of developing womanhood; honing and mastering our skills in ‘ruling’ our emotions but at the same time allowing God, in His wisdom,to guide us in using the ’emotions’ He has given us for purpose and for His glory…a journey I am still on!

Feelings can be amazing, we ‘feel’ euphoric, excited and elated in a fleeting moment but in the next we feel insecure, incapable and inadequate.  Feelings can lie, feelings hold us back, feelings make us lazy and unproductive, feelings make us compare ourselves to others, feelings make us feel lack, make us feel trapped, make us doubt who we are.

Feelings  do not lead us, feelings do not make us.

Even if we feel guilty, God is greater than our feelings, and he knows everything. 1 john 3:20

Our heavenly Father; His Spirit and His Word are and ever will be the only un-fleeting, unchanging ‘feelings’ in our lives.

HE IS truth, HE is the reality in our lives when all is falling apart, when we’re sick, when we’re in need, HE is who we cling to, HE is who we believe, HE is who we run to.

“If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” john 8:31

When mothering is tough and emotionally tiring, when marriage is tested and you feel like ‘retiring’

Don’t look inward and ‘become’ what you’re feeling; look up to Him, the master of healing

He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken. Psalm 62:6

Let’s learn to look to Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith; let’s be examples to our children, especially to our daughters, let’s be a joy and blessing to and for our husbands; let’s bring GLORY to God through our hearts and our speech, through our actions and behaviour, our giving and serving of our families by trusting HIM, not our feelings, by being led by HIM, not our feelings.

Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise. Heb 10:23
